iPhone 3G: Meets Expectations

So we got the iPhone. Here at last.

Why was I disappointed? Mostly, no video.

Certainly at least the same video streaming capability we’ve seen in the Nokia N95 (Qik.com, anyone?), but hopefully also streaming video *in* as well. Was iChat A/V too much to ask?

What remains to be seen is how much Rogers is going to charge. Luisa told me this morning she heard on the radio that it would be $80! AT&T in the ‘States is charging $30.

It’s WWDC-keynote-day! I’ll be adding to this post over the day.

Rumour: Mac Fusion

TUAW has some murky screenshots of an ad for a new Mac, the “Mac Fusion”, appreantly targetted at developers.

Woah, live video feed from a phone! Pretty impressive. There is also a full-screen version of Viru. Very cool!

Okay, so overall, this was a really long and boring keynote. Nothing we didn’t already know for the first 70-80 minutes.

Finally the 3G iPhone is rolled out, and all it seems to be missing is video.

Just a quick followup note from a thread I did on Twitter yesterday on the prices of a Gigabyte of storage on various media.

DVD’s are still the king at just over 3¢ per gig:

I find the dual-layer DVD vs hard drive equivalence fascinating, especially after talking with Iain yesterday about the eSATA ports on my Mac Pro’s motherboard.

Expandable desktop Mac now available — but not from Apple

Apple has abandoned the consumer desktop.

Well, that may be a bit harsh, after all there is the iMac, right? Um, no.

One of the biggest segments of desktop machines is the gaming box. Gamers want a machine they can open up and upgrade. Better video cards, more memory, that sort of thing. Exactly what the iMac does **not** provide.

Enter Psystar’s Open Computer, a Mac hardware clone, with a base price of $400. This includes:

2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 Processor

2GB of DDR2 667 memory

Integrated Intel GMA 950 Graphics

20x DVD+/-R SATA drive that is Lightscribe-capable

4 rear USB Ports

You’d think something like this would be case-and-desist’ed almost immediately, but appreantly there are some interesting legal wrinkles.

Does it work with the Nike sport thingee?
Can I run the iPhone’s Google Maps app on it?
Why doesn’t it have 32 GB?

iPhone apps are coming out fast

The iPhone seems to be completely opened now.

You can install custom native apps, and unlock the phone to use with a non-AT&T company.

These new devices aren’t really iPhones or iPods. They should be called iPads. They are a distinctive break from previous devices.

You can download the iPhone version of Colloquy (an IRC client) from Google Code.
