So Steve Jobs announced the iPhone just now.
It looks sweet.
It’s a phone.
It’s a 2 Mpx camera
It’s a 4 GB/8 GB flash-based iPod.
It’s some sort of internet appliance thingee.
Built-in speaker
orientation sensitive display
multi-touch UI
160 pixels per inch
3.5″ screen
quad-band GSM + EDGE (whatever that is!)
Wi-Fi + Bluetooth 2.0
conference calling
I particularly like the multi-touch UI.
You can move two fingertips on the screen to manipulate the size of an image.
Spread them further apart and it gets bigger.
Move them together and it gets smaller.
What the heck is “push-email” (“same as Blackberry”??)
Google Maps looks very nice.
The UI is customized – Apple worked with Google on this.
Overall: wow.
All that i find missing is a hard drive.
Flash is nice and good for battery life, but I want the 120 GB version to hold my video!
Ah well.
Battery life is an issue if you watch tons of video. I am happy with the storage (but I would like to know how much is used for the apps and OS).
I love the idea of ssh’ing in to my iPod. :-)
AMD acquires a ton of products (ATI) and their stock takes a dive today on a profit warning, Apple unveils one knock-off (even being litigated against for the iPhone name) at a conference and their stock jumps. Sigh, I couldn’t predict either and thus couldn’t get in for a quick profit. Motorola’s stock just slowly went down a tiny bit after the Moto Q came out. Both AAPL and RIMM seem to have unpredictable stock movement.
AMD has stood still since it released its X2 brand of processors. Intel has gained back the lead it lost. AMD needs to be ship better product to combat Intel’s stronger brand.
The ATI purchase has been a negative in the short term as the market and ATI consumers are disappointed that ATI is no longer an independent player. The major outcome of this alliance has been a complete ban on ATI chipset products appearing in motherboards that use Intel CPU’s. The profit warning is just the icing on the cake.
What phone is Apple knocking off?
“Knock-off” link: http://www.wireless.engadget.com/2007/01/11/iphone-and-lg-ke850-separated-at-birth/
You believe Apple copied the LG ke850? It has taken Apple over 2 years to create the iPhone. The ke850 just came out. I have a Motorola a1200 (keyless with a touch screen). I guess Apple copied that phone as well. Touchable full screen is not new. The iPhone moves way beyond that. The problem with the iPhone is that it does not have a swappable battery.
I am merely providing a link to someone else’s opinions. Here have another:

It even contains the term “knock-off” (strangely).
Knock-off does seem a bit strong of a description for the collection of technologies that Apple um, let’s try “borrowed” for the iPhone.
If we must talk about who knocked-off who then the answer is clear. Everyone (including Apple) knocked-off the Newton.
